Flow charts are (quite obviously) a popular method of representing workflows. However, they are shockingly difficult to create and manage. Microsoft Word and most basic flowchart-enabled programs are simply design tools. After quite a bit of research and testing, yEd was selected as the best match based on these criteria:

  1. Windows-based and low-cost
  2. Attractive charts
  3. Export to some form of XML
  4. Auto-arrange elements in a flow chart
